About the film:
Night Catches Us is a 2010 drama film directed and written by Tanya Hamilton and stars Kerry Washington, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Hector, Wendell Pierce and Novella Nelson. Set in the Germantown section of Philadelphia in 1976 during the Black Power movement in the U.S, Night Catches Us examines the 60s liberation struggles through the relationship of former Black Panthers Patricia (Kerry Washington) and Marcus (Anthony Mackie). With police harassment of African-Americans by the nearly all-white Philadelphia police force still continuing in ’76, Night Catches Us considers the near-impossibility of disentangling the personal from the political. The film intersperses snippets of iconic Black Panther footage. However, rather than romanticize Black Power, Hamilton chooses the riskier path of examining its emotional and political fallout.
